The Standard Go Set is a simple and elegant Go game set. It includes size 33 glass stones, a 1.2 inch (3 cm) shin kaya veneer Go board and size 15 wooden Go bowls.
The glass Go stones in this set (0.36 inches or 9.2 mm thick) offer a nice compromise between thickness and stability on the board, and feel nice and round in your hand. There are 181 black stones and 180 white stones, which fit perfectly in the size 15 Go bowls. The bowls in this set are made from ash wood, with a deep and rich red hue that contrasts beautifully with the lighter colored board. They are 5.9 inches or 15 cm in diameter.
The 1.2 inch (3 cm) shin kaya veneer Go board is solid, substantial and attractive. The board is also reversible, with a standard 19x19 board on the front and smaller 9x9 board on the back. The addition of 9x9 makes this board ideal for teaching beginners or having a quick game with friends.
Although typically called 'glass stones', quality stones like the ones in this set would be better described as ceramic stones. These are much stronger and more resilient than you'd usually expect from glass, and won't crack or chip easily. The additional thickness and weight of these stones gives them a pleasant feeling in your hand. The roundness means they rock more than thinner stones after being played. This is generally considered to be a desirable quality, and these stones tend to be preferred by serious players.
Shin kaya is what the Japanese typically call spruce (picea glauca), when it's used for making Go boards. It literally means 'new kaya'. The term shin kaya comes from the fact that spruce boards resemble traditional kaya boards in terms of color and grain.
