There are other beautiful kaya Go boards, but this one is truly unique. Created by master craftsman Shin Myongsik, this board was forged from a single piece of exceptionally rare kaya.
Mr Shin has been making Go boards for 50 years, since he was 12 years old, and is a true master of the craft. According to Mr Shin, kaya of this quality is so rare that a master board maker will only get an opportunity to work with it once in their lifetime, if they're lucky.
Mr Shin spent 20 years carefully drying the wood and lovingly creating this board. The board is famous throughout Asia and has appeared on television numerous times. This is Mr Shin's masterpiece.
Kaya (torreya nucifera) is a slow growing softwood tree native to Asia.
Go board craftsmen consider kaya to produce the best wood for Go boards and refer to it as a diamond among trees. The trees used to make Go boards are usually about 500 years old.
Unfortunately, kaya was once over-harvested and these days only fallen kaya trees is available. Due the to very low availability and high demand, the wood is very expensive.
Kaya is a very dense wood. Kaya boards are known and valued for their gentle golden coloring, beautiful tree rings, fine grain, pleasant scent and the sound produced by the wood when a stone is played on the board.
Kaya takes a very long time to dry before it can be used. The best practice is to dry the wood for at least 10 years to ensure that it has settled sufficiently.
If the wood isn't dried properly, the board may warp or crack when exposed to humidity or heating and cooling. You should ensure that any kaya Go board you purchase has been dried for a minimum of 10 years.
We guarantee that all kaya boards purchased from Go Game Guru have been dried for 10 years or more. A good quality kaya Go board like this one will last you and your family many lifetimes.
